4 Signs It's Time for an Auto Brake Replacement

August 18, 2022

The braking system is one of the most important safety features on a vehicle, so keeping it in good working condition is important. Unfortunately, brakes are subject to wear and tear and will eventually need to be replaced. How can you tell when it's time for a brake replacement? Here are four signs to watch for.

1. The Brake Pedal Feels Spongy

A spongy brake pedal is one of the first signs your brakes may need to be replaced. Under normal circumstances, the brake pedal should feel firm when you press it. If the pedal feels spongy, this is an indication there’s something wrong with the brakes. A spongy brake pedal can be caused by several different issues, including air in the brake lines, a leak in the system, or worn-out brake pads. If you notice your brake pedal feels spongy, it's important to have it checked out by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.

2. The Brakes Make Noise

Another sign your brakes may need to be replaced is if they start to make noise. In most cases, this noise will be a high-pitched squealing sound that occurs when the brakes are applied. The squealing noise is caused by a small metal tab attached to the brake pad. When the brake pad wears down, the metal tab comes into contact with the brake rotor, causing the squealing noise. If you hear this noise, you need an auto brake replacement.

3. Your Car Doesn’t Stop as Quickly as It Normally Does

If you notice your car isn’t stopping as quickly as it normally does, this is another sign the brakes may need to be replaced. When the brake pads wear down, they become less effective at stopping the vehicle. As a result, it’ll take longer for your car to come to a complete stop. This can be extremely dangerous. If you notice this issue, then it’s important to get an auto brake replacement as soon as possible.

4. The Brake Warning Light Is On

Another sign your brakes need to be replaced is if the brake warning light on your dash comes on. The brake warning light is usually a yellow or red color when it turns on to let you know about an issue with the braking system. Never ignore this light, as it indicates the brakes are not working properly and need to be replaced.

According to a National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey, 22% of all car accidents in the United States are caused by braking issues. This just goes to show how important it is to have a well-functioning braking system. If you notice any of the signs listed above, it’s important to get an auto brake replacement as soon as possible.
